Northumberlandia - Perfect for a trip out

A fair amount of people pass by the Angel of the North on a frequent basis being so close to the A1 and the A167 but not an awful lot of people realise whats hiding within the vast countryside of Northumberland.

Northumberlandia titled “The Lady of the North” is a man made sculpture of a female body made out of 1.5 million tons of earth. She stretches 34 metres high and is 400 metres long so if you are looking to go for a walk you better get your boots on! The entire sculpture has paths that entwine the body where you can walk on various parts such as her knees, chest and even up onto her forehead which is the highest point. From there you get an astounding view of the countryside around you and even the coal mine it was restored from which is still operational.

Northumberlandia was completed in 2012 by the Banks Group as a restoration of the Shotton surface coal mine that lies beside it. It was designed by Charles Jencks who is an renowned artist and architect also known for his books which look to question modern architecture.

What used to be just the sculpture itself and a car park has expanded to become more welcoming for guests who are looking to stay around a bit longer with its own visitor centre cafe and toilet facilities. If you are looking to stop off for a hot meal nearby there is also The Snowy Owl which offers a variety of pub classics and thirst quenching drinks.

If you are looking for some fresh air then you won’t find much better than taking a walk around this amazing sculpture. The trip itself is only an 18 minute drive away from Hedgefield House but if you felt so inclined you would almost make a day trip out of it. Norhumberlandia itself is open everyday to take a walk about early morning or late at night but the visitor centre and cafe are open 9.30am – 4.30pm
